The three of us have been in a double bed since Monday…and it is good to snuggle I have come to appreciate. We are thankful to be so close to Nicolas.

Nicolas had an incredible day. He is my hero. At 17 I have never been so proud of anyone in my life.

When I arrived this morning (I take a walk and get a Timmy’s for me and 10 Timbits for Mitchell and Nicolas) his feeding tube was gone. We really needed to get rid of that…it was irritating for Nic. Now it’s our responsibility to make him eat…great…stocks in McDonalds maybe?

The Respiratory Therapists (I love you all so very much) want to decanulate (take trache out of throat). WooHoo. Nic decides to wait to talk to me. Taking the trache out means he is on his own. To breath, to cough, to bring up whatever is in his little lungs…and it can be a little concerning. So we decided to wait for the day.

Faye…oh my gosh Faye and Edgar they are Nic’s Physiotherapist’s (well Edgar is the warm muscle that seams to know Faye’s every move, and you just wanna hug both of them!) they push Nic…as far as he can go with the kindest and most loving hearts. She is what makes anyone in ICU or on the floor want to work hard. They have that way.

Today she brings in a bed. I think “that must be for the guy next door?” Nope…it’s for Nicolas. We move him to this new bed…strap him in…and she pushes a button, gently to be weary of his blood pressure. The bed makes him stand straight up. He must be like over 6′ tall now…he seams so tall.

I look at him and know in my heart he will do this one day on his own…I just know it. He starts boxing with Mitchell…20 hits per arm, and Mitchell has never been prouder of his little brother…you can hear it in his voice, see it in his smile. Nic is done…exhausted….sleeps…

Trache comes out…and we move to another room.

We had much company this week. Of course Mitchell and Brittany are always here. But we had special visitors today, my friend Micky from Muskoka visited …with Nicolas’ first Easter gift (when you come ask to see the chicken that sings and lays eggs…it is crazy fun), Downtown Julie Brown who always gives me such inspiration, of which Nic always says ” Her and her family are too pretty and way too smart for us!” And a beautiful brunette, that he met at Horseshoe Valley last year. I wanted to take a picture of the smile he had when she arrived but thought better of it?

His tummy is so sore. You would think that some wonderful Pharmaceutical Company would come up with pain meds that don’t screw your bowels up so bad. Really? Then they make you drink some crap, take more pills to make stuff come out of you…Really? I remember this very well when I had babies… so frustrating.

Mitchell and Brittany took Nicolas for his first ride in the wheelchair around the 9th floor. Including Mitchell doing Wheelies on the ramps…Poor Nic 🙂

My Aunt Donna and Aunt Sue arrived to spend a couple days with Nicolas and I. I love the way they look at him. It’s magical how much they love us…without even saying a word.

Nic sleeps much today…that’s ok, we applied to Lyndhurst Rehab today and Mom is going to visit tomorrow. Time to move on.

He is watching TV on his Ipad and has had a pretty good day eating. It is quiet and I am happy.

‘Until next time,

I can’t sleep…it’s 12:21am and I am looking over St Michael’s Hospital from the 17th floor of my hotel…and my mind is racing. Mitchell and Brittany have left to Muskoka to look after the puppies and to sleep in a bed they can both fit on I think.
